Food and cooking tips

Buy Fairtrade Food : The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards. These standards are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO).

Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and certified by FLO. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.
  • Find out which fair trade products are available at which supermarkets
  • Get involved in fair trade campaigns.

Buy Seasonal Food : If you're eating foods out of season, it's likely that they have come a long way - try to eat food that is both locally produced and can be found at that time of year, locally!

Dieting 101

The low calorie diet

As most people know, low calorie diet depends on the fact that if you plan to achieve weight loss, the most important step is to injest less calories than you actually use.

So what is a calorie?
A calorie is a unit of measurement for energy. A 'calorie' is the amount of heat required to raise 1 kilogram of water 1 degree centigrade. If a food contains more calories, then it will turn into more energy to use when eaten.

Foods low in calories include bok choy, carrots, guava, beef based meals, and low-fat cheese.
