Track down specials and buy in bulk. Buying in bulk means less trips, and can be a good way of reducing your food miles.


Buy Local Food : Cultivate an awareness of how far your food travels. When Rich Pirog, Food Systems Program Leader for the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, tracked the miles traveled for 16 types of produce, he found that locally sourced fruits and vegetables such as apples, lettuce and tomatoes traveled an average of 56 miles, compared to 1,494 miles — nearly 27 times farther — for the same fruits and vegetables delivered through conventional retail channels. Things get stickier with combination foods, strawberry yogurt for example. Pirog came up with 2,216 miles by adding up the distance traveled for the yogurt’s milk, sugar and strawberries. That figure could be slashed by 90 percent if you buy plain yogurt and stir in some locally grown honey and fruit.

The South Beach Diet
The South Beach diet is a diet system invented by Dr. arthur agatston, a cardiologist from miami, usa, which stresses that one should eat "good carbohydrates" instead of "bad carbohydrates" and "good fats" instead of "bad fats"
Doctor agatston invented his system as an aid to patients with heart conditions, based on his analysis of scientific studies completed on other dietary studies.
"good" foods include, lean cuts of beef, turkey bacon, fish, feta cheese, pistachios, lowfat milk and certain vegetables, such as kidney beans, broccoli and spinach.

3 c Chick peas

2 tb Vegetable oil

2 ea Garlic cloves, minced

1 lg Onion, chopped

2 ea Celery stalks, chopped

2 ea Carrots, finely chopped

1/4 c Tamari

1 ts Cumin powder

1 ea Salt to taste

1/4 ts Turmeric

3 tb Tahini

Place soaked chick peas in a pot & cook for 50 minutes to 1 hour, till soft. Drain, save the stock & mash well. Heat ol in large skillet & saute garlic & onions for 5 minutes. Add celery, carrot, tamari, 2 tsp parsley, cumin, salt & turmeric. Saute till vegetables are tender. Add to the mashed chick peas & mix well. Add the tahini & mix well. Place in a large baking pan or two small loaf pans & bake at 375F for 45 minutes. Serve with a salad &/or vegetables on the side. "The Cookbook For People Who Love Animals"
