General cooking tips

Buy Fairtrade Food : The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards. These standards are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO).

Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and certified by FLO. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.
  • Find out which fair trade products are available at which supermarkets
  • Get involved in fair trade campaigns.

Oven Tips : With conventional ovens, minimize the preheating time. Unless you're baking breads or pastries, you may not even need to preheat.

Weight loss

The Atkins’ Diet
Now nearly 5 decades old, the atkins diet achieved most of its fame during the last few years. Although not accepted by all scientists, it supposedly allows weight reduction whilst encouraging you to eat foods that are normally considered bad for diets, like bacon and hard cheese.
On the atkins diet you are supposed to eat fat and protein, avoiding carbohydrates almost completely. Because of this, it is known as a high protein, low carb, diet.
With this diet, the foods you should avoid are processed and refined sugar, milk, white bread, starchy vegetables, white rice and white flour, including cereals and pasta made from white flour.
With the atkins diet the foods you are encouraged to eat are nutrient-rich unprocessed foods like meat, fish & poultry. You also can eat shellfish, regular full fat cheese, butter and olive oil.

The Atkins’ Diet Theory
The logic of the popular atkins diet is that even though our bodies use both fats and carbs to transform into carbs, it is the carbs that are burned primarily. If we eat less carbohydrates, our bodies will use the fat we have stored and we will achieve weight loss. This theory is contentious, not all doctors agree and some feel it is sometimes risky.
