Food and cooking tips

Good food alone cannot make you healthy and happy. You also need sunshine (for vitamin D and strong biorhythms), moderate exercise, relaxation, and love. A daily walk outdoors will give you the first three. Use a water-filter and nontoxic household products (available from us & elsewhere). Get mercury fillings out of your teeth. Avoid drugs and manmade chemicals whenever possible. If your health remains poor, find a doctor who will search for the root causes, not suppress the symptoms with drugs and surgery.

Buy Local Food : Cultivate an awareness of how far your food travels. When Rich Pirog, Food Systems Program Leader for the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, tracked the miles traveled for 16 types of produce, he found that locally sourced fruits and vegetables such as apples, lettuce and tomatoes traveled an average of 56 miles, compared to 1,494 miles — nearly 27 times farther — for the same fruits and vegetables delivered through conventional retail channels. Things get stickier with combination foods, strawberry yogurt for example. Pirog came up with 2,216 miles by adding up the distance traveled for the yogurt’s milk, sugar and strawberries. That figure could be slashed by 90 percent if you buy plain yogurt and stir in some locally grown honey and fruit.

Weight loss

The low calorie diet

In a nutshell, a low calorie weight loss regime states that in order to become thinner, it is essential to injest less calories than you actually use.

What is a calorie?
A calorie is a unit of measurement for energy. A food calorie is the the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree celsius. If a food contains more calories, then it will turn into a larger amount of energy when it is converted.

Low calorie foods include boiled potatoes, bell pepper, apricot, beef, and white eggs.

Ingredients And Procedures

6 oz Feta; Preferably Bulgarian

1/2 c Scallions (Green Onions);

-Finely Chopped 1 1/2 ts Sweet Hungarian Paprika;

-Plus More For Garnish 6 lg Eggs

1/3 c Milk

Salt And Freshly Ground -Black Pepper 2 tb Unsalted (Sweet) Butter

2 tb Fresh Dill; For Garnish

If the feta is too salty, soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Drain well and crumble into fine pieces. Combine, in a bowl, with the scallions and paprika, then set aside. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, salt and pepper, together, until frothy. Melt the butter in a 10-inch omelet pan over medium heat. When the butter bubbles rapidly, add half of the egg mixture and stir until it just begins to set. Continue cooking until the eggs are almost completely cooked, running a thin spatula around the edges to prevent sticking, about 1 1/2 minutes. Sprinkle half of the feta mixture on the omelet, then reduce the heat to very low, cover, and cook for 1 minute more. Slide the omelet onto a plate, folding it over if desired. Repeat with the remaining ingredients making 1 more omelet. Serve at once, sprinkled with more paprika and the fresh dill.
